Daito-ryu story briefly

MASTER SAIGO TANOMO (1829-1905)The feudal system was broken down after 1868 when the Meiji-restoration begun. Saigo Tanomo, the heir to Daito-ryu and Karo supreme vassal of Matsudaira Katamori at that time lord of the Aizu fiefdomu told Takeda Sogaku: "The time of the sharp edge is over. I want you to pass on Daitoryu to the generations to be". Saigo Tanomo gave all the techniques of Daito-ryu to Takeda Sogaku, who, in the beginning of the twentieth century, as the first used the term "Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu" and taught the art of it to many students.MASTER TAKEDA SOGAKU (1859-1943)Takeda Sogaku was a master of Ono ha itto ryu and Jiki shinkage ryu and in addition to his skills as a sword fighter he carried a license for the bugei ju happan the eighteen types of weapons and Hozoin Sojutsu. Sogaku taught Daito-ryu from the beginning of the twentieth century until his death in 1943.One of his best known students was Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido.MASTER KODO HORIKAWA (1899-1980)Takeda Sogaku taught Kodo Horikawa over a period of many years, and Kodo Horikawa founded, after Takeda Sogaku's death, Daitoryu Aikijujutsu Kodokai, continuing the traditional techniques and spreading the knowing of Daito-ryu. Horikawa Kodo received Hiden Mokuroku, Hiden Okugi Mokuroku, Hiden Aiki Okugi Mokuroku and Daitoryu no Menkyo Kaiden. He received in 1974 Eisei Meijin the highest sign of honor in budo from eight persons. One of them was Ishida Kazusoto, at that time president of the Japanese Supreme Court.(the photo is with Kodo Horikawa and Seigo Okamoto)MASTER SEIGO OKAMOTO (1925)Seigo Okamoto as the first of Kodo Horikawa's students received seventh dan in 1974 and shihan, the sign of mastership in 1978. Seigo Okamoto adhered to Kodo Horikawa's call to spread the knowledge of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. He founded Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Roppokai in 1980, the year Kodo sensei died.

Feudal over-lord Takeda Shingens died in 1573, and his kinsman Takeda Kunitsugu moved to the Aizu fiefdom, where he became Jito overseer of the fief. Kunitsugu introduced Daitoryu Aikijujutsu at the Aizu fiefdom, where the secret fighting art was taught only to the feudal lords and the highest ranking samurais and ladies in waiting.
